  • Medical Oncology

The Medical Oncology Departments offers the diagnosis and treatment of most cancer types in addition to preventive measures and clinical research opportunities. Treatment and observation plans for patients diagnosed with cancer are developed in a multi-disciplinary approach with cooperation of the departments of surgery, radialogy, pathology, nuclear medicine, internal medicine and radiation oncology. During therapies and follow up depending on patients need, cooperation with supportive and palliative care team which includes algology (pain care), nutrition and psychology is also done.

Under supervision of specialist doctors, specific oncology nurses, experienced in meeting the psychological and physical needs of cancer patients, are appointed to administer chemotherapy and take care of oncology patients.

  • Chemotherapy

In its most general sense chemotherapy is the treatment of tumours by chemicals. Together with surgery and radiotherapy, chemotherapy forms one of the most fundamental segments of tumour treatment. Chemotherapy is administered strictly in accordance with the type of tumour and patient's  characteristics.

Chemotherapy is performed for either or all of the following:

  • Completely curing the patient ('disease free')
  • Preventing tumour proliferation
  • Halt or slow down tumour growth
  • Eliminate suppress tumour related symptoms

Which types of medical therapy are used?
Medications may be administered in different ways. Whilst some of them are chemotherapeutic medications (cytotoxic) designed to eliminate tumour cells, others inhibit tumour development and proliferation (targeted agents, cytostatics). Others include hormones and supportive care.

When is chemotherapy used?
For some certain types of tumours, chemotherapy is the only available treatment method. Some tumours require the sequential or simultaneous use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while others may require chemotherapy before or after surgery. The entire duration and frequency of use depends entirely on the chemotherapy programme selected specifically for the patient's condition.
Psychological Support

Nutrition and Diet
Consulting a dietician allows the creation of a dietary programme that is both satisfying in terms of taste and supportive of cancer treatment.

Pain Treatment
Our department of algology (pain management) clinic, is established to treat individuals who suffer from chronic disabling pain. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to cancer pain, headache, back/neck pain, neuropathic (nerve) pain, muscle pain, cancer pain, and post-injury or surgical pain.

Pain is a personal experience requiring personalized treatment approaches.

Following a detailed examination, pain specialists will determine the most suitable treatment options for the patient.

  • ONCOLOGIC SURGERY;

W e can recommending multidiscipliner  approaching  under the our hospitals and the doctors,

  • General Surgery

At the Department of General Surgery we predominantly focus on the surgery of three ‘systems'. The endocrine system, including thyroid surgery and minimal invasive adrenal surgery for adrenal tumours.
Second, gastrointestinal tumours. Laparoscopic colon & rectum cancer surgery as well as surgeries for stomach cancer are common in this category. Third, we focus on cancers of the hepatopancreaticobiliary system (liver, pancreas and biliary system). Besides the standard surgeries we offer minimal invasive alternatives for those patients with gallbladder cancer and certain liver tumours.

  • Orthopaedic Oncology

At the departments of Orthopaedic Oncology is dedicated to providing the most effective therapeutic modalities for treating bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Malignant bone tumours include osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, metastatic carcinoma, myeloma, and other metastatic bone tumours.

Orthopaedic Oncology also offers innovative treatments such as limb salvage procedures, designed to save the limb while surgically removing the tumour.

Multidisciplinary Treatment Team
Our team consists of leading orthopaedic surgeons, as well as rehabilitation specialists
And  ,cooperation between:

  • Medical Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Pathology

Weekly meetings between these departments coordinate and manage patient care. In addition, our patients have access to:

  • Clinical trial enrolment
  • Psychosocial support
  • Patient educators and resources
  • Support groups

Comprehensive Patient Care
Our multidisciplinary team works together to provide a comprehensive evaluation and determine the best course of treatment available
Our physicians have extensive experience with rare and challenging forms of osteosarcoma that require special surgical procedures such as limb salvage surgery and rotationplasty for example.

Gynaecological Oncology
At the Department of Gynaecology and Oncology, we are capable of treating all kinds of gynaecologic malignancies such as cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer and pregnancy related trophoblastic tumours.
For early stage disease in cases of endometrial and cervical carcinoma, we prefer to perform our surgeries laparoscopically which enables a faster recovery and less pain. Laparoscopic operations of gynaecologic malignancies are performed with high standards and without compromises.
In our operating rooms, we are able to obtain a frozen section diagnosis by our attending pathologist. Thanks to our advanced technological infrastructure, all pre-operative radiological imaging studies can be reviewed by the surgeon and radiologist during the operation inside the operating rooms.
Postoperative treatment decisions are taken based on regular tumour board meetings with the attendance of our colleagues from different specialities including radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology, and pathology.

Ear Nose Throat Oncology
At our Ear, Nose & Throat Department we surgically treat benign and malign tumours in the head-neck region. Surgery for laryngeal carcinomas is one of the most commonly done procedures at our ENT department. Those include a wide range of oncologic surgeries such as microlaryngeal - endoscopic organ preservation surgery for early glottic carcinomas of the larynx and other techniques such as partial or total laryngectomy with or without neck dissection for extensive malignancies of the larynx. Our department works in close collaboration with other departments for several types of skull base tumours such as glomus jugulare, acoustic tumours, or temporal bone carcinomas. We are capable of operating difficult-to-treat tumours with navigational systems. Tumours of the salivary gland, especially parotid tumours are resected under neural monitorization.
Tumours of the paranasal sinus can be cured with less functional loss by virtue of an experienced surgical team and the latest endoscopic equipment. Our surgical team has tremendous experience in oncologic surgery not only for primary resections but also for complex reconstructive interventions.

Neurosurgery Oncology
The number of cancer patients is increasing around the world. We know that 20-25% of cancer patients have brain or spine metastases.
 Neuro-oncological conditions we treat include:

  • Brain tumours
  • Spine tumours
  • Peripheral nerve tumours
  • Spinal cord tumours

Benign brain tumours include pituitary adenomas, acoustic neurinomas and meningiomas. Malignant tumours that most commonly require surgery are often gliomas or metastatic lesions. Spinal column tumours are mostly metastatic tumours. Severe pain usually occurs from metastasis of the spine and requiring treatment. Peripheral nerve and spinal cord tumours are important because of their effect on nerves causing pain and weakness in the patient.
Technologies

  • Neuro-navigation
  • Cyberknife Radiosurgery
  • Digital Angiography
  • Advanced MRI and CT
  • Stereotactic Frameless Biopsy
  • Video-EEG Monitorization
  • Brain Mapping

In deep-located brain tumours, we use neuro-navigation to minimize the damage of normal brain tissue. These technologies help the surgeon find a deeply located, small tumour while using a small incision. Postoperative patient comfort is much better in those cases. We also use navigation assisted biopsies which helps us in making a diagnosis in difficult lesions as well as CyberKnife Radiosurgery in the treatment of some tumours. In addition, Video-EEG monitorization and brain-mapping help us with localizing tumours.

Diagnosis and treatment of tumours
The management of brain and spine tumours requires a comprehensive and multidiciplinary approach

  • Medical Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neuropathology

We have the equipment, technology and experience necessary to allow high level care of patients with brain and spine tumours.

Radiation Oncology

Successful clinical outcomes generally require a combination of treatment modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy, anti-cancer drugs and hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and gene therapy.

Today; radiation therapy technology is so far advanced that X-ray beam can be tailored to the shape of a tumor and delivered to the target area with a high degree of precision and intensity.

Radiation Oncology is the medical use of ionizing radiation as part of cancer treatment to control malignant cells. As a discipline, it concentrates on treating cancer and sometimes other illnesses. It examines the effect of radiation and tumor behaviour and it is involved in research and training.

What is radiotherapy?
Radiotherapy is the use of ionizing radiation on malignant and some selected benign illnesses. Approximately 60-80 % of all cancer patients are exposed to radiotherapy at least once during the course of the disease. Radiotherapy may be used with curative intent, in adjuvant settings (intensifying the effectiveness of other treatments), with palliative intent (where a cure is not possible and the aim is for local disease control or symptomatic relief) or for prophylactic (protective) purposes.

Treatment planning systems employed are designed to perform image-based planning procedures. They use the latest technologies to determine tumor borders by image processing and image transferral.

3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT)
Conformal radiotherapy is designed to deliver higher doses of radiation to cancer cells while significantly reducing radiation to the surrounding healthy tissues, and allows physicians to visualize the treatment area in three dimensions with greater precision than conventional radiation, targeting a tumor while sparing healthy tissue.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
IMRT delivers an escalated tumor-killing dose of radiation only at the tumor site by precisely applying numerous shaped beams with several intensity modulated fields from multiple beam angles. Using sophisticated computerized dose calculation methods, it allows the beams to conform precisely to the shape of tumor while significantly sparing healthy tissue.
